Main nutritional recommendations

These are based on adult recommendations. Children <5 years require a more energy-dense diet; children >5 years should be encouraged to adopt adult nutritional guidelines

Recommendations
  • Distribution of food energy and carbohydrate intake to balance insulin action profiles and exercise (and adjustment of insulin doses to varying food patterns)
  • Total energy needs to be sufficient for growth but to avoid obesity
  • Total daily energy intake should be distributed approximately as follows
    • Carbohydrate >50%
      • encourage complex unrefined higher fiber carbohydrate
      • moderate sucrose intake
    • Fat 30–35%
      • less than 10% saturated fat
      • less than 10% polyunsaturated fat
      • more than 10% monounsaturated fat
    • Protein 10–15%
      • decreasing with age
  • Fruit and vegetables (five items per day are recommended)
